REPORTERS WITHOUT BORDERS
We have a new meeting place - The Irish Embassy & Grill - at 1234 Bishop Street, just below Ste. Catherine Street.
It has a very friendly and convivial atmosphere.
And a hearty, reasonably priced menu for lunches.
Our monthly meetings are still active and we look forward to greeting more members.
The lunches are on the Second Wednesdays of each month, starting at noon, with no specific end time. Apart from the club lunches, the bar staff make everyone welcome at any time of day or evening.
The next big event for the club is a talk by Dennis Trudeau on REPORTERS WITHOUT BORDERS. Dennis os Vice-President of this organization which is doing valuable work in getting reporters into areas around the world where news is controlled and diffuclt to obtain. He will talk about the work and the dangers involved.
This event is open to the public and will be held at the Atwater Library on Monday, December 14th, at 7 pm.
Admission is free.
The Atwater Library is at 1200 Atwater Avenue, just below Ste. Catherine Street. It is easily accessible from the Atwater metro station and bus routes going to Cabot Square.
Cercle des journalistes de Montréal Montreal Press Club
MONTREAL PRESS CLUB WANTS YOU! The venerable Montreal Press Club is turning 60 in December. We’re looking for new members to celebrate with us – and take the club into its next 60 years. The club’s origins go back to returning Second World War correspondents and local reporters who felt they needed a place of their own to hang out and spin yarns. The first home opened on Friday, December 10, 1948 in the Laurentien Hotel at the corner of (then) Dorchester and Peel. Over the years the club has been hugely influential as a meeting place for making contacts, exchanging information and gossip and for relaxing in good company. Big names in journalism, sports, entertainment and politics found their way to the club in its glory days of the 1950s and 60s. Join us in celebrating this December 10th in our current meeting place, Taverne Crescent, from 5.30 pm. Bring a colleague, consider membership in a legendary organization and enjoy the Taverne’s tasty tidbits - free - and cash bar at Happy Hour prices. As well as providing opportunities for making contacts and friends, club membership gives visiting privileges at other press/media clubs in Canada and around the world. There’s a downloadable membership application form on our website. All persons engaged in media are eligible. If accepted, you are notified and we hit you up for $25.00. What could be easier – or better value?
See you at Taverne Crescent, 1433 Crescent Street, just above Ste. Catherine Street

BIG CELEBRATION ON THE HORIZON!!!!!!
The 10th of December 1948 was the night the Montreal Press Club opened its own first bar after months of planning and holding meetings in various watering holes around the city.
To celebrate this historical event and the remarkable longevity of the club, we are holding a 60th birthday-cum-Christmas party. This will be on Wednesday, December 10th, from 5.30 p.m. onwards - or, in the bar, earlier for anyone wanting a head start.
The party will be in the upstairs room at Taverne Crescent (formerly known as The Claddagh). There will be a cash bar at Happy Hour prices and free “finger food” to allow for easy mixing and socializing.
For entertainment we hope to have a line-up of members to tell stories of past glories - or not so glorious episodes in the life of the club. And music and a display of photographs. Formal invitations with a lucky number for a prize will be mailed out in a couple of weeks.
Ideas and contributions to the fun are eagerly anticipated. Please send in suggestions by email or by leaving a message on the phone.
THE YEAR
It has been a very quiet year with only the monthly lunches keeping members in touch but we are hoping to change this in 2009. A membership drive is in the offing. We plan to reach out to media organizations letting them know the venerable Montreal Press Club/Cercle des journalistes still exists and is eager to welcome new members to continue the tradition of mixing and mingling with colleagues - networking in current terminology. If you know anyone working in any of the local papers or broadcast outlets, please invite them to the party - or let us have names, addresses so that we can send invitations.

Greetings and Best Wishes from the Board to all our members - current, past and prospective.
Good news about our meeting place.
The Claddagh, our meeting place for the past seven years, recently changed hands and has re-opened as the Taverne Crescent. It has new decor and an elegant new menu.
The new proprietors are happy to have us as customers and are continuing to offer the bar beer and wine at a special price as before.
Our first event under the new regime was the December Second Wednesday/Christmas Party. This was very successful - about 17 members attended and gave the food and wine rave reviews.
We hope to see more people at the January Second Wednesday - the 9th January. And in February, we may even have an extra special event.
The Montreal Press Club is now accepting entries to the 2008 Robert Stewart Essay Competition. The topic is Tolerance. There are three prizes - $2,000.00, $1,500.00 and $1,000.00. The essays should be between 1,000 and 1,200 words. The competition is open to undergraduate students in journalism, public relations and communications studies enrolled in recognized Canadian institutions. Closing date is January 31st, 2008 with winners to be announced on March 12th.
